There is some bad news coming if you are a WhatsApp fan and an owner of a Blackberry, Nokia or older Android smartphone. The world’s most popular communication app and Facebook-owned firm is about to withdraw support to some devices.

WhatsApp first came to our mobile devices seven years ago and the company explained that the decision had come about as technology had changed so much over that period. WhatsApp made a statement on their blog which said: “As we look ahead to our next seven years, we want to focus our efforts on the mobile platforms the vast majority of people use. So, by the end of 2016, we will be ending support for WhatsApp Messenger on some mobile platform. While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future. This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp. If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone before the end of 2016 to continue using WhatsApp.” Affected devices include BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10, Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian S60, Android 2.1, Android 2.2, Windows Phone 7, iPhone 3GS on iOS 6.

Thankfully it’s not all bad news for WhatsApp fans with the service launching video calling last month. In another statement on their blog they said: “We’re introducing this feature because we know that sometimes voice and text just aren’t enough.” Whatsapp has announced it is extending support for BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10, Nokia S40 and Nokia Symbian S60 until June 30, 2017.
