Approval To Extension Of Free Bus And Train Fares For Another 6 Months
The cabinet approved a THB2.7 billion project to extend free bus and train services for another six months earlier this week. Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said the free public transport service will be extended to the end of April of 2017. Meanwhile the Transport Ministry has been asked to expedite co-ticketing for an integrated public transport system.
There are currently 800 free buses and 152 free trains in service on 73 routes serving people free of charge. The free ride scheme was initiated in 2008 during Samak Sundaravej’s term as prime minister and has been continued ever since to help lower travel expenses for low income people.
