Motorcyclists Fined For Using Pattaya Tunnel
Motorcyclists in Pattaya are facing an expensive learning curve when it comes to the newly opened Pattaya tunnel on Sukhumvit Road, having received fines of 1,000 Baht each for using the tunnel which is clearly signposted as prohibited to motorcycles.
Police Chief Col. Apichai Kroppech said on August 29 that, in the tunnel‘s first three days of being open, 18 motorcyclists were caught using the tunnel and fined, stating that the tunnel is clearly signposted but motorists simply ignore them.
Pinit Maneerat, a City spokesman, went on to say that motorcycles, tuk-tuks and carts are not permitted to use the tunnel as there is no dedicated lane for them to do so.
He went on to reiterate that large trucks and trucks carrying dangerous or hazardous cargo were also not permitted to use the new tunnel.
The speed limit in the tunnel is 80kph and stopping in the tunnel is strictly prohibited as one Facebook user recently found out after authorities were alerted to a post online where a man stopped in the tunnel to pose for pictures next to his red sports car.
