Bangkok’s Longest Traffic Tunnel Opens
Bangkok's longest traffic tunnel, U-mong Mahaisawan, was officially opened to traffic this week. It has take almost five years to complete the construction of this four-lane and 1.5 kilometres long tunnel. Chairing the official ceremony to open the tunnel was Bangkok governor Pol Gen Asawin Kwanmuang.
U-mong Mahaisawan runs parallel to the Somdet Phra Chao Taksin road to pass under Rama II road.
The 17-metre wide four-lane tunnel runs five meters underground and stretches 1.5km. The one billion baht project was first initiated in 2001 but construction started in 2011 or 10 years after due to the project transparency.
It is hoped that the opening of the tunnel will help to ease traffic jam at Mahaisawan intersection which was one of Bangkok’s busiest traffic intersections.
